Students Participate in Advocacy Day at the State Capitol

On Tuesday, April 9, The University of Scranton sent a group of students and staff to Harrisburg for the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) annual Student Aid Advocacy Day to advocate for state grants for higher education.

John Cawley, Ph.D., presented “The Economics of Obesity” at The University of Scranton’s 29th Henry George Seminar on Apr. 8 on campus. A professor in the Department of Economics and the Department of Policy Analysis and Management, at Cornell University, Dr. Cawley’s research interests include the economics of risky health behaviors; in particular, those that relate to obesity.

Cellists Mark Kosower and Mingyao Zhao will perform twice at University of Scranton and premiere Nate Sparks’ new composition for strings.

Panuska, S.J., Faculty/Student Research Program,” in honor of its longest-serving president; and will rename the Panuska College of Professional Studies the “Leahy College of Health Sciences,” in honor of long-time University benefactors Edward ’68, H’01 and Patricia Leahy, and their son, Edward, Jr.

New Clinic Directors Proud To Serve Students and Community

Medical Director Susan Russell, M.D., and Administrative Director Maria L. Vital G’11, Ph.D., spent the past few months juggling the many responsibilities that came with getting The University of Scranton’s Edward R. Leahy Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured up and running.

Program on Israel/Palestine March 21

All are invited for a program on “Fostering Justice and Peace in Israel/Palestine: Palestinian and Jewish Perspectives on Current Realities and the Path Forward” on March 21 at 5 p.m. in the Pearn Auditorium, Brennan Hall or via Zoom.

The University hosts multiple academic competitions and educational events for area elementary, middle and high school students during the spring semester. The competitions include award presentations, and several also include interactive elements, such as the Evening of Environmental Science, planned for Apr. 18 this year.

The University of Scranton’s University of Success, a four-year pre-college mentorship program that is offered free of charge to participants, is now accepting applications for the upcoming 2024 academic year that begins this summer. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the eighth grade.

The University of Scranton hosted the 22nd annual Northeast PA Brain Bee for high school students on campus in February. In Concert: The University of Scranton Jazz Band with guest soloist Loren Schoenberg, piano and tenor saxophone, presented by Performance Music at The University of Scranton, will take place Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center. The concert is open to the public, free of charge. At 3:30 p.m. on March 2, in the Atrium of the Houlihan McLean Center, Schoenberg and award-winning filmmaker Kris Hendrickson will host a free screening of their new WVIA documentary “Wham Re-Bop-Boom-Bam: The Swing Jazz of Eddie Durham.”

Grammy-award winning jazz musician and noted historian Loren Schoenberg to perform, lecture and screen new documentary at Scranton.

Registration is available through March 22 for The University of Scranton’s Hayes Family Science Competition for High School Physics and Engineering Students. Hundreds of students from area high schools compete annually in the day-long academic competition that emphasizes fun applied demonstrations and experiments to test the high school students’ knowledge of physics and engineering concepts.
