Lecture Demonstrates Jesuit Values in Action through Mercy in Motion

Oct 20, 2016

The University of Scranton will host a lecture by Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J., director of mission for Jesuit Refugee Service/USA, about the Jesuit Refugee Service’s new Mercy in Motion campaign. Fred Mukelo, a Congolese refugee, will discuss his story of displacement from his native country to his eventual emigration to Scranton at the event on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Kane Forum of Leahy Hall.

Launched in December 2015, the goal of Mercy in Motion is to expand and strengthen educational programs around the world with the goal of providing educational services to 100,000 additional refugees by the year 2020. For more than 35 years, the Jesuit Refugee Service has focused on education as a means to create peace around the world while fostering the development of more resilient and cohesive societies. The organization has been driven to serve the most vulnerable, where there is the greatest need. Only 36 percent of refugee children attend secondary school, and less than one percent have the opportunity to pursue a higher education.

Father O’Donovan is a noted theologian and president emeritus of Georgetown University.

The event is sponsored by the University’s Refugee Crisis Committee. For more information on this lecture, which is free of charge and open to the public, contact Helen Wolf, Ph.D., executive director of the University’s Office of Campus Ministries, at helen.wolf@scranton.edu or at 570-941-7419.
