University of Scranton Awarded Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Grant

Jun 22, 2015

The University of Scranton was among the only 65 colleges and universities, municipalities, community groups, schools and law enforcement agencies to be awarded an Alcohol Education Grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) for 2015-2017.

The grants support funding of prevention programs focused on underage and college-age alcohol consumption and support related law-enforcement activities.

The grants are awarded through a competitive application process.

“These grants are highly competitive and have rigorous standards recipients must meet to qualify,” said PLCB Member Joseph E. “Skip” Brion. “This year, we received 103 applications from organizations in 38 counties. When we approve the successful applications, we do so knowing these are evidence-informed programs that will successfully address alcohol-related issues.”

The maximum award for the two-year grant is $40,000. The University received a total grant of $39,976 for the two-year period, which will be used to support prevention initiatives and educational programing. The University’s initiatives include Late Night at Scranton, which provides students with events on campus during evening weekend hours, and AlcoholEDU, a research-based, online alcohol education program designed to assist students in making healthy decisions regarding alcohol use, which is taken by incoming students, among others.

“The University is grateful to receive PLCB grant funding, which helps us to provide our students with proven alcohol education programming that aims to reduce high-risk drinking and encourages healthy decision-making,” said Stephanie Adamec, director of the University’s Center for Health Education and Wellness.

This will mark the fourth consecutive year that the University has received Alcohol Education Grant funding from the PLCB.
