Scranton Brass Orchestra To Perform Sunday, January 4

The Scranton Brass Orchestra, comprised of 28 professional brass and percussion players from the region under the direction of Cheryl Y. Boga, left, and Mark Gould, will perform on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Houlihan-McLean Center at The University of Scranton. Admission is free, and the performance is open to the public.

The Scranton Brass Orchestra, presented by The University of Scranton and under the direction of co-founders and artistic directors Cheryl Y. Boga and Mark Gould, is comprised of 28 professional brass and percussion players from the region.

Boga serves as the director of Performance Music at The University of Scranton, a position she has held for more than 30 years. Her areas of responsibility include the University’s bands, performance choirs, string ensembles, guest artist concert series, Nelhybel Collection and the World Premiere Composition Series, which she co-founded with the late Vaclav Nelhybel. The World Premiere Composition Series is now in its 32nd year.

Gould was principal trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for more than 30 years and has also been on the faculty of The Juilliard School since 1982. Additionally, he joined the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in September 2004, and currently chairs the brass department there. He is also the director of The New York Trumpet Ensemble.

Gould and his former student and now colleague Joseph Boga, a 2014 graduate of The Juilliard School and a native of Chinchilla, will also offer a brief duo performance during the program.

Additionally, two students hailing from our region serve as section leaders with the group: trumpet section leader Jesse Morvan is a junior at Temple University and a native of Dalton and percussion section leader Janelle Decker is a senior at Kutztown University and a native of the North Pocono area. 

Scranton Brass Orchestra members and instruments played are as follows: Eb Trumpet/Cornet and Piccolo Trumpet: Joseph Boga and Lauren Klein; Bb Trumpet/Cornet: Carl Achhammer, Joseph Boga, John Carey, Joe Devizia, Phil Gilmartin, Lauren Klein, Ed Luckey, Jesse Morvan, Matt Wren, Mike Yevich and Gould; Flugelhorn: Jeff Leas; Horns: Justin Ambrozia, Megan Wilski-Schneider and Kristen Yarmey; Trombones: Todd Hunter, Malcolm Viney and Ilan Raschkovsky; Baritone/Euphonium: Ryan Berry, Conor Flynn, Wayne Smith and Chris Wilski; Tuba: Steve Lakawicz and Ryan Lamoreux; Percussion: Magdalyn Boga, Janelle Decker and Frank Torquato.
