Jo Ann Burns Platko CRNA, MSN
Assistant Program Director, Nurse Anesthesia

Jo Ann Kathleen Burns Platko CRNA, MSN was named Assistant Program Director of the School of Nurse Anesthesia in August 2005. Jo Ann began her nursing education at Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke, PA where she earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science – Nursing. Continuing her nursing education, she graduated Magna Cum Laud from College Misercordia, Dallas, PA with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Jo Ann spent more than 10 years in the field of Oncology, becoming certified in the specialty before accepting a position in critical care nursing. She then went on to graduate from the Wyoming Valley Health Care System/University of Scranton School of Nurse Anesthesia. Currently she is attending Villanova University, Bryn Mawr, PA and plans to graduate with a Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in Nursing Research and Education.

Professor Buxton has been a psychiatric/mental health nurse for over 20 years and has worked in a variety of settings. She teaches psychiatric/mental health nursing as well as fundamentals of nursing. Professor Buxton is a PhD candidate at the University of Wisconsin. Her research interests include women and obesity. She is especially interested in the stigma of obesity and how it affects a woman's health care experiences.

Dr. Carpenter has over 20 years of teaching experience in both the classroom and clinical settings. She currently teaches medical-surgical nursing, undergraduate and graduate research, and graduate nursing ethics. Dr. Carpenter's research activities have focused on education in nursing, professional commitment, chronic illness, and qualitative research methods. She is co-author of the textbook "Qualitative Research in Nursing: Advancing the Humanistic Imperative."

Dr. DiMattio's areas of specialty are Adult Nursing, Nursing Education, and Research. She teaches care of the medical-surgical patient on the junior undergraduate level, nursing research on the both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and nursing education on the graduate level. Her clinical experience is in cardiothoracic and cardiac nursing. Her areas of research expertise include: functional status as a measure of recovery; women's recovery from cardiac events; and women's participation in research studies. She enjoys quantitative data analysis and the application of advanced statistical techniques.

Dr. Farrell is currently in private psychiatric practice as a clinical nurse specialist. As an educator she has more than 25 years experience. She teaches Psychiatric and Obstetric Nursing, Women's Health and Men's Health to non-nursing majors at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level Dr. Farrell teaches case management theory and clinical. She holds certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Women's Health, In-Patient Obstetric Nursing, and is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. Dr. Farrell has done research in the areas of healing experiences of abused women, relationships of abused women and young adult women, and the impact of mentoring in young adult women. She is co-author of the text "Quick Look Nutrition."

Marian Farrell

Professor Feeney has been a Women's Health Nurse practitioner for 18 years and a Certified Nurse Midwife for the past 12 years. She has practiced full scope midwifery at the University of Pennsylvania and locally at Moses Taylor Hospital. She has practiced in a variety of women's health and prenatal programs.

Professor Feeney teaches health assessment and obstetrical nursing to undergraduate students. She practices part time as a Women's Health NP/CNM for Geisinger Medical Group in the Tunkhannock office.

Dr. Hanson teaches at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Her current teaching responsibilities include family nurse practitioner theory and issues in advanced practice nursing at the graduate level, and pharmacology at the undergraduate level. Dr. Hanson also practices part-time as a family nurse practitioner at a rural primary care office. Her research interests are in the area of cigarette smoking behavior in cross-cultural and adolescent populations. Dr. Hanson has published over 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and has presented numerous papers at national and international research conferences. In addition sh e was the author of a $500,000 federal grant the University received for our nurse anesthesia program.

Mary Jane S. Hanson

Dr. Harrington serves as Chairperson of the Department of Nursing. Her experience includes practice areas of medical/surgical, intensive care, and labor and delivery. She is certified as an HIV/AIDS Instructor Trainer for the American Red Cross. Her teaching expertise includes medical-surgical nursing, fundamentals and maternal-child nursing. Dr. Harrington's research includes the development of maternal behaviors in teenage mothers and HIV prevention and women's health. She is currently involved in international HIV/AIDS work in Africa. Dr. Harrington is also co-author of a book on Service-Learning in the Nursing Curriculum.

Patricia Harrington

Dr. Hudacek teaches at the undergraduate level. Her teaching areas include pharmacology, and adult health nursing with a focus in the following areas: renal, orthopedic and neurological care of the adult patient. Her area of research is narrative storytelling of nursing which focuses on the global stories of nurses and underlying dimensions of caring in nursing as they relate to professional nursing practice. Her publications on the topic include "Making a Difference: Stories from the Point of Care" (Volumes I and II). Volume I of the publication received the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing "Best of Book Award in 2004."

Sharon Hudacek

Dr. Lesneski has worked in several hospitals and home health agencies. Her teaching responsibilities include classroom instruction and clinical instruction in community health nursing, and clinical instruction in medical-surgical nursing. Currently she is practicing as a registered nurse in a local hospital's emergency department. Her area of research interest is cardiovascular health. Her research identifies why individuals delay seeking treatment when they are having a heart attack.

Professor Lovecchio has an extensive clinical teaching background in the areas of medical-surgical and critical care nursing. She currently teaches medical-surgical nursing to the juniors and seniors. Professor Lovecchio is a doctoral candidate at Villanova University. Her dissertation is entitled: The effectiveness of an on-line alcohol education program in changing knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of first-year college students. Her focus is on researching effective strategies that will help to diminish dangerous alcohol consumption among college students.

Ann McAndrew Culp, CRNA, MSN is a Diploma RN from Pittston Hospital School of Nursing and an alumnus from this program. After returning to school and graduating from Ottawa University, Kansas City, Kansas with a BA in Health Care Administration, Ann then went to Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio and received a Masters in Nursing. Ann has been involved with the Wyoming Valley Health Care System/University of Scranton, School of Nurse Anesthesia Program since 1992, currently serving as Clinical Director - Education.

Professor McGeehan teaches both didactic and clinical Pediatrics at the undergraduate level. She has a broad range of clinical experience working as a staff nurse in the Pediatric ICU's at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and in home health at Mercy Home Health and Moses Taylor Home Health Services. She has taught clinical pediatrics for the last 10 years. She received a diploma from Community Medical Center School of Nursing, a BSN from the University of Scranton and a Masters in Nursing Education from Drexel University in Philadelphia. Her interests include Atraumatic Care of the Child, Pediatric Palliative Care and Healthcare Informatics.

Professor Nicoteri teaches at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Her teaching areas include Advanced Clinical Assessment, Women's Health, Pharmacology, Family Health, and Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family. In addition to her teaching experience Professor Nicoteri also works as a Family Nurse Practitioner in Student Health Services at the University. Her current teaching responsibilities include teaching physical assessment to sophomores and family nurse practitioner students, teaching family health to non-nursing majors, and women's health to the FNP graduate students. Professor Nicoteri is a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland. Her areas of research include teen mothers and babies, and college students' health care seeking behaviors.

Caroline Sombers Raskiewicz, CRNA, BSBA, MSN was appointed Program Director of the Wyoming Valley Health Care System/University of Scranton School of Nurse Anesthesia in August 2005. Caroline began her career as a Diploma RN Graduate from Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston, PA. She obtained a Certificate in Nurse Anesthesia from Wilke-Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, PA. After graduation, Caroline received a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from College Misericordia, Dallas, PA.As a long time instructor in didactic and clinical anesthesia, she obtained a Masters Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve, Cleveland, Ohio. Her dedication to the field of anesthesia led her to do volunteer clinical anesthesia in Equador, South America. Caroline is planning to return to Case Western Reserve to obtain a Doctorate in Nursing Practice.

Prof. Wright teaches on the undergraduate level and has clinical experience in community health, hospice, and medical-surgical nursing. She maintains clinical practice as a hospice RN. She is currently completing a PhD in Nursing at Loyola University Chicago and has published several peer-reviewed articles. Her research interests are maternal bereavement, grief, and end of life care.

She has taught in a variety of settings: hospital associate degree and diploma programs, and at the university. Her teaching responsibilities include medical-surgical nursing, leadership, adult health nursing and professional issues. Dr. Zalon's research has been in the area of pain and its management with a special focus on the elderly.

Mrs. Zawislak has been employed by the Department of Nursing since 1998 as an instructor in the Nursing Lab. She is responsible for assisting the lab director, Deborah Zielinski, in the daily operations of the lab, preparing the supplies for various nursing labs, assisting students in preparing for skills demonstrations and evaluating students during their return demonstrations. Pat also works part-time as a perinatal nurse and a childbirth educator for a local hospital. Her previous areas of experience are home health nursing and adult critical care nursing.

Patricia Zawislak

Mrs. Zielinski has fifteen years of clinical nursing experience at the following institutions: the Hershey Medical Center, the Medical College of Georgia, and Moses Taylor Hospital. Clinical specialty areas include: care of the patient with neurological/neurosurgical, orthopedic; and ear, nose and throat impairments. She was also a hemodialysis nurse, a continuous ambulatory peritoneal nurse and Infection Control Nurse. Mrs. Zielinski has also taught as adjunct faculty for 4 years at the university. She is currently the Director of the Nursing Lab and Clinical Coordinator.
